Conventional infrared and microwave sounders have limitations for PBL research due to their coarse vertical resolution, signal attenuation, and sensitivity to the underlying surface. In contrast, GNSS-RO provides all-weather observations over any surface for truly global coverage. GNSS-RO’s approximately 100 m vertical and 10 km cross-track horizontal resolution complement the broader horizontal coverage of IR and microwave observations.
PlanetiQ’s very high signal-to-noise ratio RO is designed specifically for profiling the lower troposphere and boundary layer, enabling profiles to reach closer to the surface. Some profiles also include linearly polarized RO (PRO), providing precipitation measurements alongside temperature, pressure and moisture profiles as well as information on turbulence.
